Mel was born in Sutherland, Saskatchewan in 1930, receiving his education at Sutherland Public School and City Park Collegiate until graduating in 1948. He was introduced to painting at the age of ten by Ontario artist, Salem Hatch. In his teens, the well-known prairie watercolor artist, Robert Hurley, introduced him to the watercolor medium. Hurley took Mel on several painting excursions in the Saskatoon district, which furthered his interest in the watercolor medium. Horace Wickenden, Mel’s art teacher, was instrumental in encouraging him to excel in the art field.
In March 1984 Mel Heath was accepted into the Federation of Canadian Artists and in April 1984 he was made a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor.

Since Heath began painting in earnest in 1951, his work has been reproduced in calendars, books and has been purchased by major art acquisitions in Canada and abroad.
